FAQs on Coronavirus testing

Do I need a Green Pass to travel in Italy?

Italy for now will recognise proof of negative Covid Tests (PCR or antigen) or proof of a vaccination recognised by the EU. The Green Pass is expected to be gradually rolled out in summe (after mid-June). At that stage, it is suggested to check with official Italian sources or with your airline.

Can I travel to Italy if I haven't yet been vaccinated?

The Digital Green Certificate is a document that facilitates free movement inside the EU. Not only Covid vaccinations are recorded in the the Green Pass, but also results from Covid tests. Italy recognises results from RT-PCR test and rapid antigen tests. Being able to provide a negative test result is one of the conditions that have to be met in order to enter Italy.

What is a PCR or Molecular test?

The RT-PCR antigen test (Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction) is the standard gold method to quickly and accurately identify any traces of Covid-19 current infection in the body. This is the most common type of test used to prove that you are currently infected when travelling abroad. These tests require a swab, which can be self-administered or performed by a healthcare professional. These swabs are then sent to a specialised laboratory which can often return results in less than 24 hours.

Where can I do a lateral flow test to detect infection from Coronavirus in Italy?

If you want to do a private test, you can look for a laboratory or a pharmacy that offers this service. On faiuntestevai.it we have over 4,000 centres throughout Italy offering different types of Covid-19 tests including Antigen tests.

What is the difference between qualitative test, quantitative and semi-quantitative?

In relation to infection by Coronavirus, a qualitative test determines the "if" while quantitative tests and semi-quantitative answer to the question "what?" By measuring the level of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in a patient's blood sample, the quantitative tests and semi-quantitative give a more definitive answer on the body's immune response to the virus.
