Which Coronavirus test are accepted by airlines?

Molecular (PCR) tests are typically accepted by airlines, but more and more frequently are also accepted antigen test results. Usually, it is required that the test has not been done before 48 hours from the date of the flight. What is Italy’s Green Pass for travel or the EU's COVID travel pass?

The EU Digital COVID Certificate (EUDCC), is a document that allows people to travel to/from all 27 member states of the European Union.

A Digital Green Certificate is a digital (and if requested also a paper) proof that a person has either

  • been vaccinated against COVID-19; or
  • received a negative test result; or
  • recovered from COVID-19

The pass is issued by hospitals, test centres, health authorities etc. It consists of information about the individual and their vaccination/test/COVID recovery. The digital version consists of this information and a QR code stored on the individual's mobile phone.

The certificates should be rolled out for issuance and verification by summer 2021.

What is a PCR or Molecular test?

The RT-PCR antigen test (Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction) is the standard gold method to quickly and accurately identify any traces of Covid-19 current infection in the body. This is the most common type of test used to prove that you are currently infected when travelling abroad. These tests require a swab, which can be self-administered or performed by a healthcare professional. These swabs are then sent to a specialised laboratory which can often return results in less than 24 hours.

Do I need a doctor's prescription for a rapid antigen Covid test in Italy?

Usually antigen tests/lateral flow tests do not require the prescription of a doctor in Italy. However, it is good to inform your doctor about the values ​​of the results in order to enable it to assess whether or not there is the need to prescribe a possible molecular tests.

What is the difference between qualitative test, quantitative and semi-quantitative?

In relation to infection by Coronavirus, a qualitative test determines the "if" while quantitative tests and semi-quantitative answer to the question "what?" By measuring the level of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in a patient's blood sample, the quantitative tests and semi-quantitative give a more definitive answer on the body's immune response to the virus.
