An infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord is called meningitis (meninges). It may affect anybody at any age, but infants, teens, and young people are most vulnerable. Increased amounts of specific cells and proteins that might indicate a meningitis infection are checked for during a complete blood count (CBC) or total protein count.
