Trichomonas vaginalis - symptoms and how to test

Trichomoniasis is a frequent sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. About 3.7 million persons in the United States are infected with this parasite; Trichomonas testing identifies the parasite in samples from the vagina or penis to identify an infection. A foul-smelling vaginal discharge, itching in the genital area, and painful urination are all symptoms of trichomoniasis in women. Symptoms of trichomoniasis in men are rare. Trichomoniasis increases the risk of contracting or transmitting other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, in both sexes.
