PSA Test - what is it and how the test is done

The prostate gland is a crucial gland present in all males. This gland performs essential sexual functions in a male. However, with age, it tends to develop several problems that lead to a person facing difficulties while voiding urine.

Problems with the prostate might become difficult to treat, especially when they are diagnosed later than usual. For this reason, it is recommended that testing for the normal functioning of the prostate gland must be made a routine exam for all males in their middle to old ages.

Usually, a digital rectal examination (DRE) is performed by a doctor in the clinic to evaluate the size, consistency, and shape of the prostate gland to see if it is normal or not. But apart from that, the prostate is also tested for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) levels in the blood using a blood sample. Increased levels of this antigen indicate both the presence of benign hyperplasia and cancer of the prostate.

Testing makes it easier to determine the next plan of action for the person who might be suffering from any of the problems related to this gland.
