Il Pap-Test viene utilizzato per la prevenzione oncologica ginecologica (carcinoma dell'utero, papilloma virus: HPV). L'indagine è utile anche per evidenziare la presenza di patologie infiammatorie croniche cervicovaginali. A scopo preventivo oncologico l'esame andrebbe eseguito ogni anno dai 25 ai 65 anni, in assenza di cellule atipiche ed ogni sei mesi in presenza di uno stato infiammatorio (flogosi uterina). Il pap test si può eseguire direttamente dal ginecologo durante una visita ginecologica o in normale laboratorio di analisi con un prelievo vaginale che permette di raccogliere le cellule del collo dell’utero.
Le cellule vengono poi “strisciate” su un vetrino ed esaminate al microscopio (esame citologico). Nel sospetto di carcinoma in situ la diagnosi va confermata mediante colposcopia.
Fattori interferenti
Interferenze sui risultati possono derivare da una non corretta procedura di prelievo. Tutte le lavande vaginali debbono essere interrotte 48-72 ore prima del prelievo.
